IT CASE STUDY 04 / Windows / access

Remote access
& hybrid work.

Supporting remote employees with domain policies, the completed transition from SonicWall NetExtender to SonicWall Cloud Secure Edge, remote monitoring and troubleshooting tools, and endpoint software-update infrastructure.

02 / Challenge and contribution

The challenge.

Reliable remote work depends on device configuration, VPN access, correct permissions, and shared resources. Remote IT support also requires tools to monitor and troubleshoot devices and a manageable way to distribute security patches and software updates.

My contribution.

I configured and tested Windows Remote Desktop policy, prepared remote-use devices, and supported the transition from temporary NetExtender access to SonicWall Cloud Secure Edge for remote users. I also introduced monitoring and remote-support software to work alongside VPN access and deployed ManageEngine Endpoint to support centralized security patching and software updates.

Supportable endpoints.

Example 01Completed

Remote Desktop policy and permissions

My work. Created and tested a Windows Group Policy configuration and assigned the appropriate Remote Desktop Users permissions.

Recorded outcome. Remote Desktop access was verified for the intended workstation configuration.

Example 02Transition completed

Remote user VPN migration to Cloud Secure Edge

My work. Prepared laptops and VoIP phones for employees working off-site. When secure-edge licensing was unavailable, users temporarily relied on SonicWall NetExtender; I subsequently cleaned up VPN accounts and helped restore SonicWall Cloud Secure Edge access for remote users.

Confirmed outcome. Remote users now connect using SonicWall Cloud Secure Edge instead of NetExtender. The earlier NetExtender workaround is retained only as historical context.

Example 03Implemented

Remote monitoring and troubleshooting tools

My work. Added monitoring software and remote support utilities to work alongside VPN connections, providing a way to investigate and address problems on off-site devices.

Recorded outcome. Remote monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities were added to the remote support workflow; no claim of full unattended coverage or measured response-time reduction.

Example 04Deployed

ManageEngine endpoint deployment

My work. Deployed ManageEngine Endpoint to support centralized rollout of security patches and software updates across managed computers.

Recorded outcome. The endpoint-management tooling was deployed for patching and software-update administration; individual patch rollout totals or compliance outcomes are not claimed.

Example 05Configured & reactivated

Cloud Secure Edge access and shared drives

My work. Helped users register accounts and devices, cleaned up older VPN assignments, reactivated SonicWall Cloud Secure Edge for several users, guided connection steps, and remapped shared drives after connection changes.

Recorded outcome. Cloud Secure Edge became the VPN solution for remote users, and selected users regained access to required services and shared-drive resources. No fleet-wide access audit or performance comparison is claimed.

Example 06Implemented & tested

Satellite office site-to-site VPN modernization

My work. Installed SonicWall at a satellite office, cleaned up VPN accounts, reactivated Cloud Secure Edge access for several users, and established interoffice connectivity. Expanded the site from one laptop with NetExtender to three workstations and two laptops using the tested site-to-site arrangement.

Recorded outcome. Successful interoffice VPN testing and a larger, usable satellite-office setup. Microsoft Teams meetings and training can now happen at respective offices, reducing the need for field personnel to travel to the main location. Read the complete deployment case study ↗

What the evidence supports

Remote Desktop configuration was tested; remote monitoring and troubleshooting tools were added; and ManageEngine Endpoint was deployed for centralized patching. Remote-user VPN access has moved from temporary SonicWall NetExtender use to SonicWall Cloud Secure Edge. Separately, the satellite-office project documents an established and successfully tested SonicWall site-to-site VPN supporting multiple on-site computers. The two VPN arrangements serve different use cases and should not be conflated. Patch-compliance rates and installation totals are not claimed here.

Content is generalized from recorded support work. No employee names, accounts, customer records or internal infrastructure details are displayed.
